Fiat Doblo Cargo, 2010

Fiat Doblo Cargo, 2010

The new Fiat Doblò Cargo is top-in-class in terms of performance and functional features, load capacity and productivity, low fuel consumption and cost-effective running. It is ideal for professionals who spend many hours of the day riding in the vehicle: in city traffic and for frequent stopping-and-going for loading and unloading cargo but also for quick, long-distance transfers. The Fiat Doblò Cargo was created for these people with roominess, cost-effective running, loading and driving ease, combined with safety and comfort, in mind.

The record-breaking features of the new Fiat Professional vehicle
Built on a new platform, the new Fiat Doblò Cargo has broken many records in its class: interior length up to 2.17 metres, width between wheel arches of 1.23 metres, volume from 3.4 to 4.2 cubic metres, payload from 750 to 1000 kilograms, combined fuel consumption of 4.8 litres/100 km and range of 1250 kilometres (with the 1.3 Multijet 90 HP engine). These record-breaking features point to major benefits in terms of work optimisation and running cost reduction for customers. The loading compartment is much roomier than the previous model: square, regular and fully exploitable, it is equipped with sliding side doors and generously-sized rear doors to make light work of loading and unloading.

Innovative design and capaciousness make Fiat Doblò Cargo the new point of reference for its category: a front end with a great personality, streamline sides with pronounced wheel arches and a rear end that puts the accent on the accessibility and capacity of the loading compartment. The appearance of a solid, robust vehicle is further confirmed by the inner and outer dimensions - larger than the previous model. This validates the Fiat Professional vehicle trend which started in 2006 with the introduction of the New Ducato and in 2007 with the New Scudo, both of which are larger and more capacious than their corresponding predecessors.

Reliable, environment-friendly engines
Fiat Doblò Cargo will be launched with a 1.4 petrol (95 HP) and three turbo diesel engines: second generation 1.3 Multijet - 90 HP, 1.6 Multijet - 105 HP and 2.0 Multijet - 135 HP. All Euro 5 compliant (Euro 4 variants are available for 1.4 petrol, 1.3 and 1.6 Multijet), the engines stand out for driving pleasure, excellent performance, quiet operation, and low running costs (fuel consumption and servicing), as well as being reliable and environment-friendly. More specifically, Euro 5 engines fit the new Start&Stop system and a particulate filter as standard features (diesel only). The engine range will later be expanded with the addition of Natural Power versions (dual petrol/methane fuel) and a new diesel version with robotised gearbox.

Safety
To ensure optimal dynamic behaviour, comfort and active safety in all road and load conditions, the Fiat Doblò is equipped with innovative mechanical solutions, including a Bi-link rear suspension layout with variable component calibrations depending on specific use of the vehicle. The Doblò Cargo implements state-of-the-art electronic stability control devices, such ABS with EBD electronic brake force distribution and, above all, ESP complemented by a Hill Holder system that assists the driver when starting on a slope, for consistent, predictable handling.

With crumple zones, front airbags and innovative front side bags for head and chest protection, the new Fiat Doblò Cargo is designed and built to reach the highest passive safety standards. Plenty of clever little solutions - like the roof shelf, a document holder on the dashboard and lots of handy oddment compartments - turn the cab into an office on wheels. Technical solutions and high-tech equipment improve comfort and help focus on driving: climate control (automatic version is available), Cruise Control, parking sensors, integrated Blue&Me hands-free system and the "Blue&Me TomTom" navigator.

The range
The range is organised around 7 different body types: short and long wheelbase van, high top van, short and long wheelbase 5-seater combi; particularly interesting is the brand-new short and long wheelbase drop-frame version, which can be easily and cheaply converted for specific trades (refrigerated vans, fixed and tilting flatbed trucks). Two outfits of the new commercial vehicle are available (standard and SX) for each of the two versions: Cargo and Combi. This means a total of approximately 400 possible solutions by selecting all the possible body, side door, rear door and engine options. Fiat Doblò Cargo has 11 paintwork colours (3 pastel and 8 metallised) with a long list of optional devices for various customisations.

The heir to a bestseller
The new Fiat Doblò Cargo is the heir to a successful model that was chosen by over 650,000 customers (total in Europe and Turkey) since it was introduced at the end of 2000. Part of its success due to the constantly renewed portfolio. The Doblò has always promptly responded to customer demands during its lifecycle, with the introduction of high top, long wheelbase and environment-friendly models (Natural Power and diesel engines with DPF). Today's introduction portfolio is very rich and complete, capable of satisfying the most diverse requests of professional customers.

A top-in-class, capacious, functional, and accessible loading compartment
The loading compartment of the new Fiat Doblò Cargo is roomy, square, regular and fully exploitable with new volumes that put it at the top of the segment: 3.4 cubic metres for the Cargo short wheelbase version, 4 cubic metres for the short wheelbase high top version and 4.2 cubic meters for the Maxi long wheelbase version.

With generously-sized inner dimensions, the loading compartment is either 182 cm (short wheelbase versions) or 217 cm (long wheelbase versions) long, 171 cm wide and 130 cm high (155 cm in high top versions). With 3 centimetres of extra length between wheel arches with respect to the previous model, the new models are now 123 cm wide which means that up to 2 europallets can be conveniently fitted into the loading compartment.

A rotating partition may be fitted in combination with a folding passenger seat to further increase the volume by approximately 0.40 cubic metres and obtain a 305 cm (short wheelbase) or 340 cm (long wheelbase) long resting surface.
As the previous model, various types of partitions separating the cab from the loading compartment are available: panelled, glazed, tubular and ladder.

Six hooks are arranged on the loading compartment floor for safely securing and fixing loads. One or two lights according to the version guarantee adequate lighting. A handy, removable flashlight is available.

A new optional fitting is a pair of cross bars which may be mounted on the upper part of the loading compartment for accommodating long items, such as ladders, packages or tubes, and make the most of an area which is not always exploited. This solution means that no external loading systems are needed and at the same time the bottom of the loading compartment can be exploited to the maximum. The bars are shaped for easy, safe access both from the rear door and from the right-hand side door. They are fitted with mobile hooks for easily fixing the transported items with straps.
The loading compartment is accessed through two large, asymmetric rear swing doors (each swing door is 123 cm wide), precisely flushed with the wheel arch width, and either 125 cm (standard versions) or 146 cm (high top versions) high.

Furthermore, one or two generously sized sliding side door (70 cm wide and 117 cm high) are available (optional or standard according to versions). The doors are remarkably light to open and close for easily loading and unloading operations.
Particular care was devoted to designing the handles: they can all be operated with either the right or left hand and are sized for use with gloves. Specially, the rear door handle can be opened with one finger, great when carrying large packages.
A smart-looking, handy up-and-over tailgate is available for all versions (except for high top).

Best-in-class capacity with Bi-link rear suspension
The Fiat Doblò Cargo fits a compact Bi-link independent wheel rear suspension, unprecedented in its segment, for optimising comfort and handling while considerably increasing load capacity.

With modular components (springs, shock absorbers, cushion pads, stabilisers, etc.), the Bi-link suspension can be specifically calibrated to the vehicle's features and mission:
    * Cargo 750 kg: version without anti-roll bar. Optimal performance-weight trade-off with excellent dynamic behaviour and comfort.
    * Cargo 1000 kg: optimised capacity (top in its class) with anti-roll bar, the suspension allows up to 1450 kg of admitted load on rear axle (300 kg more than the previous Fiat Doblò Cargo generation).
    * Combi: version with anti-roll bar. Optimised for comfort and great handling at the same time.

For the first time ever, drop-frame versions for new missions
The Fiat Doblò Cargo portfolio includes brand-new drop-frame versions (short and long wheelbase). This means that Fiat Professional can offer accessibly priced major transformations which only apparently appear to belong to the van segment for specific trades (refrigerated vans, fixed and tilting flatbed trucks). The maximum admitted weight for the new Doblò Cargo versions is close to that of the previous Scudo generation: a great advantage for customers who are looking for a reliable, cost-effective, compact-sized vehicle. Given a theoretical capacity in excess of 1100 kg, the maximum admitted loads on the front and rear axles are actually 1090 kg and 1450 kg - unique values in the segment.

The maximum fittable length is 225 cm for short wheelbase versions and 280 cm for long wheelbase versions; the maximum outfitting width is 187 cm for both versions: this values vary according to outfit type and weight distribution.

The Fiat Doblò drop-frame versions are ideal platforms for outfitting also because of a number of devices for outfitters to easily adapt their structures to the body. Specific electrical system interfaces may be ordered (this feature was highly appreciated on Ducato model in the past).

A distinctive style with functional, flexible interiors
Designed by Centro Stile Fiat, the innovative style of the Fiat Doblò Cargo puts the accent on the peculiarities of a practical, robust and functional commercial vehicle on the outside while the passenger compartment is as comfortable and bright as can be expected in a multi-purpose vehicle. Outer dimensions are larger than the previous model: 439 cm long, 183 cm wide, 185 high (210 cm with high top) and a wheelbase of 276 cm. Doblò Maxi (long wheelbase 311 cm) has an outer length of 474 cm, a height of 188 cm and the same width as the short wheelbase. The load threshold (54.5 cm from the ground) is virtually as high as the previous model.

The front end expresses a strong, clear-cut personality and is well balanced with the total dimensions of the vehicle: prominent features are the big headlights and a large, rounded hood. The bumpers - available painted in the same colour as the body and with a large "mouth" and Fiat badge in the middle - pick up on the style of the previous model. The front end is complemented by a large windscreen that makes the passenger compartment brighter and improves visibility.

The side view of the Fiat Doblò Cargo is typified by essential, clean-cut lines which make the vehicle look dynamic and streamline. The elements which contribute to the vehicle's personality are the large wing mirrors with built-in side indicators and shiny black rear door pillars. The sliding side doors are perfectly integrated into the side while the stylistic solution of the sliding guide - recessed and integrated in the vehicle body - is reminiscent of that adopted on many known MPVs.

The rear end immediately suggests the large loading volume and capacious available space. Two types of rear doors are offered: asymmetric swing doors, panelled or glazed or glazed up-and-over tailgate. The first two types have a characteristic central element which aligns and encloses the number plate, the door handle and the Fiat badge in an innovative, distinctive manner. The up-and-over tailgate is most certainly a distinctive element of the new Fiat Doblò Cargo: its shape, large glazed surfaces and characteristic elements - such as the "set" code and badge - make its design truly exclusive.

Roominess and brightness are the first things noted aboard the Fiat Doblò Cargo. The interiors include a roof shelf, larger and more functional than the one featured in the previous model, in addition to many open and closed compartments.

For example, the side door holders may hold two half litre bottles of water and an A4 sized folder, while the large glove box with lock and key can accommodate a 14" laptop computer. An open compartment is arranged on top and many other handy compartments for holding small and large objects, such as mobile phones, pens and coins, are found throughout. An optional compartment cleverly fitted inside the passengers seat cushion is available for some versions.

Another highly appreciated optional is the document holder clip that turns the dashboard into a small folding desk for jotting down notes or holding papers.
Upholstery and seats of the new vehicle come in a wide range of colour and material combinations. Specially, the seats are wrapping, comfortable and practical to satisfy the needs of professional customers.

A rigid parcel shelf on short wheelbase Combi versions may be set to two levels and hold up to 70 kg in the lower position to configure the boot as needed.
Combi versions have a boot capacity of 790 and 1050 litres (short and long wheelbase, respectively).

Reliable, environment-friendly engines
The technological excellence of Fiat Doblò Cargo is expressed by the articulate range of petrol or diesel engines (Natural Power 1.4 16v T-JET 115 HP versions will be available after launch), all made by FPT - Fiat Powertrain Technologies. According to the power levels, the engines are combined with mechanical 5 or 6 speed gearboxes (a new 1.6 version with robotised gearbox will be making its debut next year).

The following engines are:
    * 1.3 MultiJet II 16v - 90 HP (Euro 5) with Start&Stop and DPF
    * 1.3 Multijet 16v - 90 HP (Euro 4)
    * 1.6 MultiAir 16v - 105 HP (Euro 5) with Start&Stop and DPF
    * 1.6 Multijet 16v - 105 HP (Euro 4)
    * 2.0 MultiJet 16v - 135 HP (Euro 5) with Start&Stop and DPF
    * 1.4 16v - 95 HP (Euro 5) with Start&Stop
    * 1.4 16v - 95 HP (Euro4)

All Euro 5 engines are provided with standard Start&Stop system for stopping the engine momentarily when standing and restarting it, to cut consumption and increase quietness in the passenger compartment.

The scheduled service frequency has been decreased with respect to the previous model. For the main coupon, the Doblò has gone from 20,000 km of the previous 1.3 Multijet engine to 35,000 km of the new 1.3 Multijet engine (Euro 5). This means a 34% saving on schedule servicing costs on a distance of 120,000 km.

1.3 Multijet - 90 HP Euro 4 / 1.3 Multijet II Euro 5 (with DPF and Start&Stop)

Developed and made by FPT - Fiat Powertrain Technologies, the 1.3 Multijet II Euro 5 - 90 HP belongs to the second generation of Multijet engines. These engines incorporate new Common Rail injectors with a balanced hydraulic servo-valve to control the quantity of fuel injected into the combustion chamber with improved precision, and in a faster and more flexible sequence than in the past.

In particular, the increased number of injections (up to 8) in the same cycle optimises the introduction of fuel ensuring a more gradual combustion with beneficial effects in terms of consumptions, emissions, quietness and handling. Consequently, with respect to the previous generation, the new Common Rail injectors ensure reduced consumptions and CO2 levels, in addition to considerably abating polluting emissions.

Multijet engines are the most modern evolution of the Common Rail technology. After the JTD (1997) and first generation Multijet (2003) engines, the Multijet II secures yet another engineering record for Fiat Group Automobiles staying ahead of future and even stricter standards on emissions. The new Multijet II engines can implement increasingly more advanced strategies for optimising combustion: for example, Injection Rate Shaping mode (two consecutive injections with no hydraulic lag) reduce noise, fuel consumption and - in Euro 6 perspective - even harmful emissions (-30% of nitrogen oxide potential).

The new 1.3 Multijet II Euro 5 90 HP fitted on the Fiat Doblò Cargo has a variable geometry turbocharger for optimised supercharging throughout the range: with respect to today's 1.3 Multijet 75 HP, the power is increased by 15 HP (+ 20%) and the maximum torque of 200 Nm (+ 5%) is delivered at only 1500 rpm to ensure rapid pickup.

The Euro 5 variant with anti-particulate filter and standard Start&Stop cuts consumption by approximately 8% with respect to the previous 75 HP (combined cycle). Merit of these results goes to the Start&Stop system which momentarily stops the engine and then starts it up again to reduce consumption and increase quietness in the passenger compartment. Another important environment-friendly features is combined to the system: a Gear Shift Indicator which suggests when to shift up or down in order to optimise fuel consumption.

The result is top-in-class fuel saving: only 4.8 litres for 100 km in combined cycle (that is 1250 km of range) and a CO2 emission level of only 126 g/km. At the same time, the performance of the new Fiat Doblò Cargo engine is excellent: 158 km/h of top speed.

1.6 Multijet 105 HP Euro 4 / Euro 5 (with DPF and Start&Stop)

The 1.6 Multijet family is a major evolution with respect to the known, appreciated 1.9 Multijet 105 HP improving on performance, conform, emissions and running costs.

Equipped with an electronically controlled fixed geometry turbocharger, the 1.6 Multijet delivers a remarkable torque already at low engine speeds. This is even more surprising considering the small displacement: 290 Nm with respect to 200 Nm of the previous 1.9 Multijet (+45%). A torque of 300 Nm delivered at only 1500 rpm makes this engine a leader amongst engines with capacities of less than or equal to 1.8 litres. If we then consider specific torque (i.e. divided by the cubic capacity) the 1.6 is the highest performing engine in the category - nothing short of a revolution in today's diesel engines. With this equipment, the new Fiat Doblò Cargo reaches a top speed of 164 km/h; a combined cycle consumption of 5.2 l/100 km (which is approximately 10% less than the 5.8 l/100 km of the previous 1.9 105 HP) and a level of CO2 emissions equal to 136 g/km.

The 1.6 Multijet service operations are spaced further apart in running cost reduction perspective. As a result of the high quality level and the efforts spent on each component to further improve ruggedness and efficiency, the 1.6 Multijet only needs one coupon every 35,000 km. The results in terms of running cost reductions are evident: for example, on a distance of 120,000 km/year scheduled servicing costs are cut by 40% with respect to the 1.9 Multijet 105 HP of the previous Doblò generation.

With regards to environment-friendliness, 1.6 Multijet 105 HP implements state-of-the-art exhaust gas treatment technologies, such as a Close Coupled Diesel Particulate Filter and a built-in EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system to improve control of gas temperature and flow while guaranteeing lower emissions and reduced fuel consumption at the same time.

The 1.3 Multijet - like the 1.6 Multijet - is available in two versions: Euro 4 and Euro 5, the latter fitted with standard DPF and Start&Stop.

2.0 Multijet 135 HP Euro 5 with DPF and Start&Stop

The 2.0 Multijet - 135 HP Euro 5 is the natural evolution of the tried and tested 1.9 Multijet - 120 HP from the point of view of performance (power +12% and torque +60%) and polluting emission reduction (Euro 5 directive compliant). These engine features translate into outstanding driving experience and excellent performance: with a top speed of 179 km/h, a combined cycle consumption of 5.6 l/100 km, equal to a decrease of 9% with respect to 5.9 l/100 km of the previous 1.9 - 120 HP and a CO2 emission level equal to 148 g/km.

Various technical interventions were implemented on 2 litre engine to increase performance and reduce noise and vibrations: supercharging is obtained by an electronic controlled fixed geometry turbocharger which improves power and delivers high torque already at low engine speeds (320 Nm at 1500 rpm).

An electrically activated EGR valve, managed directly by the engine control system, a recirculated exhaust gas cooling system and a close coupled catalyser have all been introduced to reduce exhaust emissions. Furthermore, the 135 HP engines fits a standard anti-particulate filter.

The remarkable reliability is the result of many specific tests carried out on the engine and on the single components during the entire development process.

1.4 16v petrol - 95 HP Euro 4/Euro 5
Euro 4 and Euro 5 compliant with low fuel consumption, the 1.4 16v - 95 HP engine is the ideal solution for use in cities. The torque curve is very gradual from 1500 to 4000 rpm making it extremely elastic for smooth running and low fuel consumption: 7 l/100 km in the mixed cycle (Euro 5 configuration) obtained also because the engine is very light in weight (only 100 kg). The top speed is 161 km/h and CO2 emissions are equal to 163 g/km.

Start&Stop and Gear Shift Indicator

The new model fits the Start&Stop system with environment-friendliness and fuel economy in mind. Standard on all new Euro 5 engines, this device temporarily switches off the engine and restarts it to reduce fuel consumption and noise levels. In these situations, which are typical of heavy traffic in urban areas and when standing at traffic lights, when the control strategy permits, the system automatically cuts out the engine in order to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 15% on city missions and by 3.5-4% over an NEDC-type cycle.

The Gear Shift Indicator (GSI) combined with the Start&Stop system is a co-driver that discreetly suggests when to change gear, leading to more efficient use of the engine in terms of fuel consumption. For example, the GSI may suggest to shift up, by means of a signal on the instrument panel or on the Blue&Me-TomTom screen, to make the engine burn a leaner mixture or shift down to make best use of the available torque.

Safety
The Fiat Doblò Cargo is a commercial vehicle designed and built to achieve the highest levels of safety. It is the result of the many implemented devices (standard or optional according to market or outfit) starting from those devoted to passive safety and in particular two brand-new front side airbag for protecting both the head and the chest.

The new Fiat Professional vehicle guarantees constant, reliable road holding thanks to electronic dynamic control systems for braking and steering. There is the ABS system with EBD electronic brakeforce corrector and, above all, ESP with Hill Holder to assist starting up on slopes (this is the only commercial vehicle in its class to have this function available across all engines).

Additionally, the new model has all the dynamic and comfort features that allow users to embark comfortably and safely on any journey or mission. This is merit of a powerful, efficient braking system, tyres specifically designed to ensure maximum comfort and top safety and a tried and tested suspension layout: McPherson independent wheels on the front, Bi-link independent wheels on the back.

The Fiat Doblò Cargo surrounds driver and passengers with high-tech features for extra comfort and helping to focus attention on driving: climate control (manual or automatic version), cruise control, parking sensors, integrated Blue&Me hands-free system and the "Blue&Me TomTom" navigator.

Blue&Me-TomTom, the latest evolution of the Blue&Me platform, is well worth mentioning. This fully integrated infotainment system with a practical colour touch screen can be used to manage a mobile phone, a navigator system and all the necessary driving information. The device is the result of a partnership between Fiat Group Automobiles and TomTom, the European leader in portable navigation systems, and integrates with the vehicle using the Blue&Me system developed with Magneti Marelli.

Blue&Me-TomTom is fixed in conveniently safe position on the dashboard on a stand which powers the device and allows it to be removed for other uses. The system is operated by means of a steering wheels and voice controls. There is an exclusive "Car Menu" displays information on the vehicle and all connected devices:
    * all trip information on a single screen: distance travelled, consumption and range;
    * fuel reserve warning and directions to the nearest filling station;
    * places of interest, Fiat Group service centres and methane filling stations;
    * management of the mobile phone connected to Blue&Me: calls, information, contacts and call log.

Fiat Doblo, 2010

Fiat Doblo, 2010

The new Fiat that is all about space. A space to be shared with family and friends, a liveable space for travelling and socialising, for whoever chooses the Fiat Doblò as a partner for leisure or work.

It was designed with practicality and comfort in mind to make the best of space on board and accommodate up to seven occupants. An authentic "family space" vehicle that can rely on top-class safety, cost-effective running and environment-friendliness.

Compared to the previous version, of which approximately one million units were sold in all its variants, the new Fiat Doblò has been revamped throughout with a new style, new engines and new technical features. These aspects make the new Fiat Doblò the best-in-class in terms of capaciousness and emission reduction. These results were achieved by a new platform, more room for passengers (with a wheelbase of 2755 mm, it is the longest in its segment), a roomy 790 litre boot (3200 litres with the seats folded down), lower CO2 emissions (129 g/km with the 1.3 Multijet 90 HP engine, the lowest in its category), an innovative Bi-link suspension layout for extra comfort, standard safety equipment and highly modular interiors with folding, reclining seats.

Style and comfort
Created by Centro Stile Fiat, the innovative design of the new Fiat Doblò combines original forms and large dimensions in a very balanced manner to confer the impression of a robust, solid vehicle: 439 cm long, 183 cm wide and 184 cm high (189 cm with roof bars), it has a 276 cm wheelbase (best-in-class in its category).

The distinctive front end expresses a strong, clear-cut personality and is well balanced with the total weight. Prominent features are the large, enveloping headlights, the big rounded hood which forms two side "muscles" on the mudguards (this style element is recalled and emphasised on the rear wheel arches), a broad central "mouth" with a logo standing out in central position, seamless hood and bumpers. An ample windscreen with black pillars completes the newly styled front end for a brighter passenger compartment and better visibility, further enhanced by the flat blade wipers with a low, aerodynamic profile that minimises noise and interference caused by air turbulence in addition to more efficient cleaning.

Seen from the side, the Fiat Doblò is typified by an essential lines seamlessly spanning along the bottom from the front to the rear wheel arch which give it strength and dynamism. Side mouldings are standard on all versions. The side is accented by shiny black door pillars, highly functional, compact wing mirrors, and a flushed side door sliding guide integrated in the body, typical of MPVs. The large side windows confer a feeling of brightness and ample interior space. The big sliding side doors making getting in and out easier. They are large enough to accommodate rear electric windows opening the entire surface of the window for the first time in its segment.

The generously-sized rear section immediately suggests a large loading volume and amount of available space. Distinctive and modern, the swing tailgate of the new Fiat Doblò has a sleek style and a large window. The Fiat logo is set in the middle, like a small jewel stone. A unique shiny black fascia splits the tailgate in two: the upper glass part and the lower metal part.

The rear lights are arranged vertically and have a crystal clear transparent part which puts the accent on brightness. Finally, the enveloping bumpers merge into the rear wheel arches on the side and into the tailgate on the upper part without protruding.

The interiors have also been designed with functionality in mind to create appealing, welcoming environments with different combination of colours, materials and trims. The new Fiat Doblò offers many smart solutions for making the best use of on-board space, such as an array of storage compartments and flexible interiors, with up to seven seats, to satisfy the needs of those who wants to enjoy their Fiat Doblò with family and friends. Also the dashboard and the handy roof shelf are designed to ensure top level ergonomics and driving comfort.

Finally, the boot is the largest in its class (from 790 to 3200 litres with the seats folded) and, according to version, may be equipped with a parcel shelf adjustable to two heights to configure the boot as needed. Specifically, up to 70 kg can be loaded on the parcel shelf set to the lower position.

Environment and economy
The Fiat Doblò will be launched with four engines with 5 or 6 speed gearboxes, all designed and made by FPT - Fiat Powertrain Technologies:

    * 1.3 Multijet II 16v - 90 HP (Euro 4);
    * 1.6 Multijet 16v - 105 HP (Euro 5);
    * 2.0 Multijet 16v - 135 HP (Euro 5);
    * 1.4 16v - 95 HP (Euro 5).

Furthermore, all engines of the new Fiat are fitted with the Start&Stop and a DPF anti-particulate filter (diesel engines only) as standard. The Start&Stop system temporarily stops the engine when stopped (e.g. at traffic lights) and then restarts it.

The Fiat Doblò is yet another step forward in sustainable transport by Fiat, once more ahead of the EEC regulation requiring new cars to comply with Euro 5 specifications only from 1 January 2011.

A Natural Power fitted with the new 1.4 16v - 115 HP dual fuel (petrol/methane) engine and a new diesel with robotized Dualogic gearbox will be available soon. Staying on the environmental theme, the new Fiat Doblò is fitted with an innovative feature, called eco:Drive. Using the USB port, this software program analyses driving style and helps cut fuel consumption and emissions.

1.3 Multijet 16v - 90 HP (Euro 4)
Developed and made by FPT - Fiat Powertrain Technologies, the 1.3 Multijet II - 90 HP belongs to the second generation of Multijet engines. These engines incorporate new common rail injectors with a balanced hydraulic servo-valve to more accurately control the amount of fuel injected into the combustion chamber, faster and more flexibly than in the past. This means more accurate combustion with benefits for consumption, emissions, NVH and driveability.

The new Common Rail injector implements IRS (Injection Rate Shaping) for modulating the fuel injection rate. This strategy allows fuel saving and reduced CO2 on a standard cycle by approximately 2%, with a NOx reduction of up to 30%.

Second generation Multijet engines are the most modern evolution of Common Rail technology. After the JTD (1997) and first generation Multijet (2003), the Multijet II secures yet another engineering triumph for Fiat Group Automobiles, anticipating future standards.

The Fiat Doblò's new 1.3 Multijet II - 90 HP is fitted with a variable geometry turbocharger for very wide usage range: with respect to its predecessor, the maximum torque of 200 Nm (+ 25%) is delivered at only 1500 rpm to ensure rapid pickup. The result is top-in-class fuel saving: only 4.9 litres for 100 km in combined cycle and a CO2 emission level of only 129 g/km. At the same time, the performance of the new Fiat Doblò engine is excellent: 156 km/h top speed and 15 seconds from 0 to100 km/h.

1.6 Multijet - 105 HP (Euro 5)
Compared to the tried and tested 1.9 JTDM 120 HP, the 1.6 Multijet is a significant step forward with improved performance, comfort, emissions and running costs in addition to considerable benefits: torque is higher by nearly 25% with equal power (1500 rpm). All this comes with much improved driveability, due above all to useful torque values delivered at low engine speeds. These aims were achieved by totally optimising combustion, which exploits the potential of the new injectors to the full.

Fitted with an electronically-controlled fixed geometry turbocharger, the 1.6 Multijet delivers an excellent absolute torque, which is even more appreciable considering the capacity of the engine: 290 Nm puts it right at the top of the performance charts for engines of 1.8 litres and smaller. If we then consider specific torque (i.e. divided by the cubic capacity) the 1.6 is the highest performing engine in the 200 HP category, with the sole exception of "supersport" engines. That is not all. Considering that the maximum torque (290 Nm) is delivered at just 1500 rpm, the revolutionary nature of the 1.6 Multijet with respect to present-day diesel engines is even more obvious: no other - not even a next-gen engine - can deliver such high torque with such low revs. With this equipment, the new Fiat Doblò has low CO2 emissions and fuel consumption (138 g/km and 5.2 litres/100 km on the combined cycle, respectively), top speed of 164 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 13.4 seconds.

Furthermore, the 1.6 Multijet needs less frequent servicing. As a result of the high quality level and the efforts spent on each component to further improve strength and efficiency, the 1.6 Multijet only needs one service every 35,000 km for perfect engine and vehicle efficiency. The results in terms of running cost reductions are evident: for example, this means one service less for distances of 90,000 km or 100,000 km, or a saving of scheduled servicing costs of 25%.

Finally, with an eye to environmental friendliness, the engine is Euro 5 approved and equipped with DPF and Start&Stop as standard. Furthermore, 1.6 Multijet - 105 HP implements state-of-the-art exhaust gas treatment technologies, such as a Close Coupled Diesel Particulate Filter and a built-in EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system to improve control of gas temperature and flow while guaranteeing lower emissions and reduced fuel consumption at the same time.

2.0 Multijet - 135 HP (Euro 5)
The 2.0 Multijet - 135 HP Euro 5 is the natural evolution of the tried and tested 1.9 Multijet - 120 HP from the point of view of performance (power +12% and torque +45% at 1500 rpm) and pollutant emissions (it is Euro 5 directive compliant). In particular, with a maximum torque of 320 Nm, it is best-in-class. These features translate into an outstanding driving experience and excellent performance (top speed of 179 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.3 seconds) with limited fuel consumption and CO2 emissions: 5.7 litres/100 km and 150 g/km on the combined cycle.

Various technical interventions were implemented on the engine to increase performance, engine torque at low speeds and reduce noise and vibrations. The 2.0 Multijet - 135 HP is supercharged by an electronically-controlled fixed geometry turbocharger which improves power and delivers high torque even at low engine speeds.

Furthermore, the emission control system includes an electrically-activated EGR valve, managed directly by the engine management system, the use of an exhaust gas recirculation cooling system and the same close coupled catalytic converter as the 1.6. Finally, the reliability of the 2.0 Multijet - 135 HP is the result of many specific tests carried out on the engine and on the single components throughout development.

1.4 16v - 95 HP (Euro 5)
Euro 5 compliant with low fuel consumption, the 1.4 16v - 95 HP engine is the ideal solution for urban use. The torque curve is very gradual from 1500 to 4000 rpm making it extremely flexible, for pleasantly smooth running and low fuel consumption (7.2 l/100 km on the mixed cycle).

Start&Stop system and Gear Shift Indicator
With respect for the environment and fuel economy still in mind, the new model implements a system called Start&Stop. Standard on all engines, this device temporarily stops the engine and restarts it to reduce fuel consumption and noise levels in the passenger compartment when activated. In these situations, which are typical of heavy traffic in urban areas and when stopped at traffic lights, when the control strategy permits, the system automatically cuts out the engine in order to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 15% for an urban route and by 3.5 to 4% over an NEDC-type cycle.

Finally, the Gear Shift Indicator (GSI) combined with the Start&Stop system is a "co-pilot" that discreetly suggests when to shift gear, leading to more efficient use of the engine in terms of fuel consumption. By means of a signal on the instrument panel, the GSI may suggest shifting up a gear to make the engine burn a leaner mixture or shift down to make best use of the available torque.

The eco:Drive system
An innovative software program developed with Microsoft, called eco:Drive, is available to new Fiat Doblò drivers. The system uses the USB port to analyse the driving style helping the driver to optimise behaviour in terms of consumption and hence emissions.

Specifically, eco:Drive gathers information on vehicle efficiency and your driving styles as you drive. All data is sent through the USB port of the Blue&Me infotainment system to a standard USB key, which can then be read on a computer. You can then take a careful look at fuel consumption and emissions for each trip (and create your own eco:Index) and get tips on how to achieve a more eco-friendly driving style. You can actually improve your score by progressing through a series of tutorials: motorists who are keen on becoming more eco-responsible drivers can expect a 15% improvement in their driving style, which means cutting CO2 emissions by 15% and an annual fuel saving of 120 to 200 Euros.

Specifically for the eco:Drive system, the Fiat brand was recently nominated "Green Champion" by the Green Organisation, a group devoted to acknowledging, rewarding and promoting best environmental practices worldwide.

Safety
The Fiat Doblò is designed and built to achieve the highest levels of safety. It is the result of the many devices offered (standard or optional according to market or outfit) starting from those devoted to passive safety which equip the entire range: front airbags and next-generation side bags, which are larger in size with respect to traditional side bags for protecting both the head and the chest.

The road holding of the new Fiat Doblò is constant and predictable through the adoption of electronic dynamic control systems for braking and steering. There is the ABS system with EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution) and, above all, ESP (Electronic Stability Program) with Hill Holder to assist starting uphill (this is the only vehicle in its segment to have this function available across all engines).

Additionally, the new model has all the dynamic and comfort features that allow users to embark comfortably and safely on any journey. There is a powerful and effective braking system, tyres designed specifically for maximum comfort and safety, and the innovative suspension structure: independent-wheel McPherson type at the front and independent-wheel Bi-link with anti-roll bar at the rear. These are a state-of-the-art solution for improving comfort, road-holding and driveability, increasing roominess and on board space and lowering the loading threshold.

Furthermore, the Fiat Doblò is leader in insurance crash test ratings, which measure the extent of potential damage to a vehicle consequent to low speed collisions. In many European markets (first and foremost Germany and the UK), insurance premiums vary according to the rating attributed to the vehicle by insurance associations. The evaluation is based on the average costs for repairs and on the statistic frequency of accidents. This is an obvious advantage even when this does not mean paying smaller insurance premiums: anywhere in the world and for all customers, a lower damage potential means cheaper repair costs and is the result of clever design implemented to reduce wrecking and improving part disassembly and reassembly of parts.

The Fiat Doblò surrounds driver and passengers with technology that increases comfort and help keep the driver to focus on the road: this includes an automatic climate control system with distribution to rear seats, an MP3 stereo with controls on the steering wheel, cruise control, parking sensors, a built-in Blue&Me hands-free system and a "Blue&Me-TomTom" navigation system. The latter is a fully integrated infotainment system whose practical colour touch-screen allows you to manage phone calls, satellite navigation and all the driving information you need. The device is the result of a partnership between Fiat Group Automobiles and TomTom, the European leader in portable navigation systems, and integrates with the vehicle using the Blue&Me system developed with Magneti Marelli.

Blue&Me-TomTom is fixed in an easily accessible and safe position, from where it can still be removed for other purposes. The system is operated from controls on the steering wheel and by voice commands. An exclusive "Car Menu" displays information on the car and all connected devices:

    * all trip information on a single screen: distance travelled, consumption and range;
    * fuel reserve warning and directions to the nearest filling station;
    * places of interest, Fiat Group service centres and methane LPG filling stations;
    * management of the mobile phone connected to Blue&Me: calls, information, contacts and call log;
    * "eco:Drive Info": real-time information on your driving style and suggestions for reducing environmental impact and optimising consumption by changing gear and using the accelerator to suit the nature of the route.

Fiat 500C, 2010

Fiat 500C, 2010

Unveiled to the world for the first time at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, the new Fiat 500C pays homage to the original 1957 Fiat 500 and its fabric roof, but also offers innovative solutions in terms of mechanical design, engines and comfort. All this in line with the most authentic Fiat tradition of giving people access to segment firsts in content and technology.

In Italy, the public will be able to take it for a test drive from July 4th, 2009, the birthday of the Fiat 500 and exactly two years after the launch of the model that really raised the bar in terms of comfort, safety, technology and features.

Using a typical open-source approach (i.e. continually evolving a successful product on the basis of input from its users), the Centro Stile Fiat design centre created the Fiat 500C by interacting with the many communities of Cinquecento enthusiasts - notably the 500 Wants You website - and reinforcing the position of the model as "a car for the people, by the people"...

Starting from the saloon version, the introduction of the soft top does not change the winning characteristics of the model such as its four comfortable seats and boot capacity, but it does add new functions that heighten enjoyment. These include easier access to the boot even when the soft top is fully open, thanks to a clever system of parallelogram hinges.

Another strong point of the original cabriolet version is its exceptional climate and acoustic comfort. Thorough aerodynamic research means that the turbulence experienced with the roof open has been reduced to a minimum, allowing full enjoyment of the fresh air and the company of fellow passengers.

The decision to re-interpret the original design in modern key, with an electric sliding roof but a stylistic design that retains the shape of the classic car makes the Fiat 500C less of a seasonal product and one that can be enjoyed the whole year round. In short, all these features make this new vehicle one of the most successful convertibles in the modern city-car segment.

A true object of design, the soft top of the Fiat 500C stands out for its elegant electrically controlled movements and its impressively finished and carefully selected technical features, from the glass rear window to the third brake light built into the soft top itself. Available in three colours (ivory, red and black), the clever soft top is matched with various paint finishes including three ad-hoc creations: a pearlescent Ragamuffin Red, a Tech House Grey so typical of sporty super cars, and Goth-Metal Blue (the latter available for the whole range).

The Fiat 500C has an exclusive feel to its interior, which is embellished with top quality and highly desirable fabrics, including Frau leather upholstery, and a long list of market-dependent standard and optional features: from automatic climate control to the innovative Interscope HiFi System, from the Blue&Me Map portable navigation unit to the smart wind-stop, and from the Start&Stop system to the new collection of customisable options.

A free and emotive expression of the automobile, the Fiat 500C retains the same dimensions as the base model (355 cm long, 165 cm wide and 149 cm high) and shares all three of its power units: the 75 HP 1.3-litre MultiJet turbodiesel engine combined with a five-speed manual gearbox and the two 69 HP 1.2 litre and 100 HP 1.4 litre petrol engines, both available with manual or Dualogic robotised gearbox. Each engine offers different qualities, but all three are defined by generosity and a lively temperament, as well as high performance and sophisticated technology. Among their common qualities are great reliability and respect for the environment (all are Euro5-approved). To confirm Fiat Automobiles' commitment to environmental protection and sustainable mobility, the Fiat 500C includes the innovative "Start&Stop" system, which controls the temporary cutting out of the engine and its subsequent restarting. When the vehicle stops, putting the gear lever in neutral and releasing the clutch will switch off the engine; to restart, simply put the car back into gear.

With the commercial launch of its latest convertible, the Fiat 500 continues to be talked about and confirms its status as a real Italian style icon, able to win over the public and critics worldwide. The best evidence of its success are the 30 awards it has won across the globe, the 11 million internet users that have visited its website (viewing a total of 200 million pages) and the more than 360,000 orders so far received across the 59 markets in which it is being sold.

This is all the more impressive when you consider that more than half the sales have been recorded outside Italy (50% elsewhere in Europe and 8% in the rest of the world). In each country where it has been launched, the Fiat 500 has generated enormous interest: in Japan, for example, there have been more than 5,000 orders. It should also be highlighted that 80% of Fiat 500 clients select the most expensive features and 90% ask for the Blue& Me system.

In short, as an expression of Italy's finest automotive design, the Fiat 500 is not merely a super-compact city car, but a real platform upon which Fiat Automobiles is building a whole family of cars with advanced technology and high attention to detail. The new Fiat 500C represents another step forward in this direction.

Alluring shape and innovative design
First of all, the front of the car differs for a slightly higher windscreen needed to resize the upper cross member; this gives a better view for the rear passengers, a stronger body and superbly clean lines. These are also enhanced by the continuity of the windscreen, which extends to the fabric roof without exposing any part of the bodywork (an extremely elegant and technologically sophisticated solution in keeping with the spirit of the Fiat 500C).

From the side, the car stands out for the outline of the pillars which present strong arches in contrast with the shape of the soft top. The soft top really defines the upper lines of the Fiat 500C and gives it a more slender look compared with the saloon version. Staying with the side view, the alloy wheels also stand out: one option is 16 inches, with a cross-spoked design that has echoes of the original 1960s spoked wheels; another is 15 inches, with a more fluid design (both wheels have the classic cup-shaped locking nuts embossed with the 500 logo).

But it is the rear aspect of the new car that is most different, particularly the clear division between the upper fabric part and the car's steel bodywork, emphasised by chrome trim like that of the Fiat 500 versions from 1957 onwards. This stylistic element makes the rear of the car appear wider by creating a horizontal line across it. In addition, the rear window (in glass with an electric demister) is more rounded. While retaining the same visibility as the 500 saloon, its smoother corners are closer in design to its 1950s forerunner.

Another important feature of the new car is the boot: this opens upwards without protruding from the shape of the vehicle (this means there is no need to step away when loading luggage). In addition, if the soft top is down, an electronic device lifts it a few centimetres to allow the boot to be fully opened. This is an extremely functional and streamlined solution which can be appreciated both for its usability, and for the way it integrates with the vehicle. It should be stressed that the Fiat 500C is "best in class" in its segment for the ease and versatility of loading and unloading. Merit for this goes to the spacious luggage compartment (with a capacity of 182 litres - just three litres less than the saloon version), the traditional upwards-opening boot and wide access.

Finally, the soft top of the new convertible comes in three colours (ivory, red and black) to match the numerous body colours (six pastel, three metallic and two pearlescent). Some of these are inspired by the vintage colours of its forerunner while others are up to date and boast a really contemporary look. Among these, three were created specifically for the Fiat 500C: pearlescent Ragamuffin Red, Tech House Grey (typical of high performance super cars) and elegant Goth-Metal Blue. (The latter is available for the whole range).

The interior of the Fiat 500C is equally exclusive, and boasts top quality materials. In particular, the new sporty seats are upholstered in a high-quality fabric which constitutes an important feature of the car for its feel and durability. The back and cushion of the rear seats are very enveloping and the side panels are upholstered in leather. As an optional extra, the interior of the Fiat 500C can be upholstered in black, beige or red Frau leather. The chrome trim and a dashboard that matches the exterior colour and is decorated by an exclusive 500C logo complete an elegant and functional interior that can comfortably accommodate four people.

An innovative soft top for a unique style
The soft top of the Fiat 500C is a true object of design, characterised by a sophisticated electrically controlled movement and innovative technical solutions. In particular a moulding of the same colour on the soft top acts as a spoiler and houses a third brake light, creating similar aerodynamics to the saloon version and a Cx of 0.33. This excellent figure puts the Fiat 500C at the top of its class, and is achieved by an optimised rear spoiler profile and rear wheel covers.

The comfort of the rear passengers has also received special attention, as proven by an air-flow speed of 7 m/s with the roof open. In addition, when the soft top is down, the spoiler is arranged so that the third brake light can always be seen. The double-layered roof fabric ensures the best possible insulation from the outside and, along with the internal coverings of the pillars, completes a superb finish for the mechanisms controlling the opening and closing of the roof.

The automatic electric soft top can be controlled either by buttons near to the interior ceiling light or from the remote control. In addition, the soft top can be operated throughout its horizontal travel (as far as the spoiler) at any speed. Vertical movement can be engaged at any speed under 60 km/h (37 mph).

The soft top is also easy to use: to open it, just press the button for at least half a second to trigger the movement that then continues automatically up to the spoiler (a midway point can of course be chosen by pressing the button again). Press the button again for at least half a second to fully open the roof. When using the remote control, the roof can be opened only as far as the spoiler. The same processes will close it; for safety reasons, the roof stops at around 25 cm from complete closure (just press the button again to complete the movement).

When the boot is open, the soft top can only be closed (the opening function is de-activated). However, if the roof is fully open and the boot needs to be opened, when the boot is opened the soft top automatically moves to a midway point to avoid obstructing loading operations.

Finally, there an optional wind-stop can easily be positioned behind the rear headrests (fixed to the parcel shelf). This accessory has been tested in a wind tunnel, designed specifically for the Fiat 500C, and made from a special porous material: it gives a notable reduction in turbulence for all passengers, at all speeds. It should be stressed that there is no need to remove the wind-stop to open or close the soft top (another unique feature for this segment of vehicle).

Environmentally friendly engines
The Fiat 500C offers an wide range of excellent engines: two are petrol (a 1.2 litre, 69HP 8v and a 1.4 litre, 100 HP 16v). The third is the 1.3 litre, 75 HP 16v MultiJet turbodiesel with DPF. Each one offers different qualities, but all are combined with a five or six speed manual gearbox. (A Dualogic sequential robotised gearbox is also available for the petrol engines, complete with steering wheel paddle shift on the 1.4 version.) All engines boast a generous, lively temperament, high performance and sophisticated technology. Among their common qualities are excellent reliability and respect for the environment: they all conform to Euro5 standard, and the 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel is fitted with a diesel particulate filter as standard.

The Fiat 500's power units are produced by Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT), the division of the Fiat group that is wholly responsible for the innovation, research, design and production of engines and gearboxes for all types of vehicle: from cars to trucks, boats and agricultural equipment. With around 20,000 employees, 16 factories and 11 research centres across nine countries, this division is one of the most important global players in power train manufacturing. At FPT, around 3,000 highly specialised technicians are dedicated to developing and engineering innovative technologies. More than 40 patents filed every year is proof of the quality and seriousness of this commitment, making FPT a centre of excellence for technology and continuous innovation.

More specifically, the proven and reliable 1,242 cm3 Fire develops 51 kW (69 HP) at 5,500 rpm, and a torque of 102 Nm (10.4 kgm) at 3,000 rpm, giving a maximum speed of 160 km/h (99 mph). The Fiat 500C with the 1.2-litre 8v engine and manual gearbox stands out for its low fuel consumption of only 5.1 litres per 100 kilometres in a combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 119 g/km (dropping to 4.8 l/100 km and 113 g/km using the Start&Stop system). Acceleration over 100 metres is an excellent 13.4 seconds, all the more impressive given the car's low fuel consumption. Intelligent engine tuning is the key, as it supplies high torque at low engine speeds (maximising driving pleasure and engine flexibility) combined with gear ratios carefully chosen to reduce consumption.

The brilliant 1.4 litre 16v engine delivers 73.5 kW (100 HP) at 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 131 Nm (13.4 kgm) at 4,250 rpm. Developed with high performance and low consumption in mind, this engine puts the Fiat 500C at the top of its class, with a top speed of 182 km/h (113mph) and acceleration 0-100 km/h in just 11 seconds. Fuel economy is impressive too: in the combined cycle, this version consumes only 6.1 l/100 km (with a manual gearbox), dropping to 5.8 l/100 km with Start&Stop. And on top of this, with 100 HP available, this compact car is capable of lively performance and sporty agility in city traffic.

Finally, the new car could not be without the choice of a 1.3 litre, 16v MultiJet diesel - the smallest and most advanced second-generation common rail direct diesel injection engine. Equipped with a fixed geometry turbo compressor and intercooler, this engine develops 75 HP (55 kW at 4,000 rpm) and 14.8 kgm of torque (145 Nm at 1,500 rpm). This engine gives the Fiat 500C excellent performance: a top speed of 165 km/h (102 mph) and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in only 13 seconds. Fuel consumption and emission levels are also among the best in the segment: 4.2 l/100 km in the mixed cycle and 110 g/km of CO2. This compact and technologically sophisticated power unit is also environmentally friendly (Euro5-approved) and comes with a DPF as standard.

Start&Stop system
Available as an optional extra on the two petrol-engine models, Start&Stop lets you stop and re-start the engine intelligently when the engine is idling and the vehicle is stationary. In these situations, typical of driving in heavy city traffic, or waiting at traffic lights, provided the control logic allows, the system automatically switches off the engine to save fuel (reducing consumption in the urban cycle by up to 12%).

As soon as you release the brake pedal or put the car in gear, the system promptly restarts the engine, giving you immediate control and response. The Start&Stop system offers further advantages in terms of comfort by eliminating vibration and noise. It is therefore a technological and intelligent solution to the demand for environmentally friendly cars with low fuel consumption.

Finally, the Dualogic gearbox can be added to enable the best possible management of gear changes, and to improve mechanical efficiency. This automated transmission system lays the foundations for more intelligent management of engine operation, and gives even lower fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions of only 110 g/km. The system uses the clutch to disengage the engine from the transmission whenever traction is not required, and switches the engine off.

Start&Stop was developed by Fiat Group Automobiles' Engineering & Design department and by FPT (with an important contribution from leading names like Magneti Marelli and Bosch).

Class-leading safety
Structurally derived from the saloon version (the first car under four metres to receive the five-star Euro NCAP rating), the Fiat 500C retains all the safety components and features (active and passive) that justifiably place it among the market's best in class.

The Fiat 500C is unrivalled in its segment In terms of passive safety, as shown, for example, by the seven airbags offered as standard (two front, two window, two side and one knee bag). The new car's stable and efficient braking system combined with its excellent acceleration and superbly reliable handling allows it to emerge effortlessly from emergency situations.

The Fiat 500C also uses sophisticated technical solutions to ensure that the driver is in perfect control of the car (active safety): from ABS with electronic brake distribution (EBD) to the advanced electronic stability program (ESP), from the anti slip regulation (ASR) system to the Hill Holder device - which helps the driver with hill starts - and hydraulic brake assistance (HBA) to help with emergency stops.

Moreover, to ensure the safety of the driver and passengers, the new model has a body designed according to the latest crash resistance criteria (this is the first super-compact car equipped with a front-end structure specifically designed to improve inter-vehicle compatibility in head-on collisions, with a rigid cabin to protect the occupants and high-absorption zones on the outside.

Both front safety belts have dual pretensioners and load limiters (those in the rear are three-point belts). The front and rear seats are equipped with an anti-submarining system that stops the wearer from sliding underneath the seatbelt. Isofix attachments for child car seats are fitted as standard across the range.

The Fiat 500C also boasts modern and sophisticated components for preventive safety, especially when visibility is reduced, for example at night or when in a tunnel. For instance, the Fiat 500C is the first in its segment to offer, as an operational extra, Xenon headlights with dipping and full-beam functions for better visibility and excellent light output in all weather conditions. In these bulbs, the filaments of conventional gas-discharge bulbs have been replaced by two electrodes - just a few millimetres apart - that generate an electrovoltaic discharge in an atmosphere of low-pressure Xenon. Made by Magneti Marelli Automotive Lighting, these bulbs give three times the light intensity and duration of standard halogen headlight lamps.

Finally, the Fiat 500C has all the dynamic and comfort features that allow users to embark comfortably and safely on any journey. The suspension system based on a Magneti Marelli design plays a fundamental role in this: front suspension is provided by independent McPherson struts while the rear suspension is semi-independent with a torsion axle. The semi-independent torsion-axle rear suspension system also features an anti-roll bar derived from the Fiat 500 Abarth to improve handling and comfort.

Standard and optional features (Italian market)
It is no exaggeration to say that anyone can find the Fiat 500C that best suits his or her demands and tastes. This is thanks to an extensive range distinguished by nine paint finishes, two equipment versions (Lounge and Rock) and three interior trims with different fabrics or leather, as well as over 100 accessories created specially for the 500. In short, the new convertible version has all the features that a modern car can have, including those that were the reserve of far higher segments until very recently.

In Italy, the range starts with the Lounge version, which has a large number of features as standard. In terms of safety, for example, there are seven airbags (two at the front, two window bags, two at the side and one to protect the knees), ABS with EBD and front headlights with DRL (daytime running lights) function. The new 500C Lounge is available with all engine configurations. In particular, the version with the 1.4-litre, 100 HP 16v engine also includes as standard the sophisticated ESP system and a sporty instrument panel.

For maximum comfort, the Fiat 500C Lounge offers the most advanced features on the market today: Dualdrive electric power steering, parking sensors, manual climate control, Blue&Me system, radio/CD/MP3 player, height-adjustable leather steering wheel with controls, height-adjustable front seat and 50/50 split rear seat with headrests, central locking and electric windows, key with customisable remote control and active handle on rear door.

On the outside, the Lounge version stands out for its Chrome kit, which includes elegant chrome trim on the side windows, exhaust terminal, the interior door handle inserts, gear lever and the front and rear bumpers. The 185/55 R15" alloy wheels and the electric wing mirrors painted to match the body come as standard. Finally, the inside is distinguished by special black or brown leather fabric.

Fiat 500 Abarth R3T, 2010

Fiat 500 Abarth R3T, 2010

Abarth introduced its latest racing gem at the 51st Sanremo Rally. The new Fiat 500 Abarth R3T will lend its name to a promotional rally trophy in 2010, due to join the two track events (European and Italian) planned for the Fiat 500 Abarth Assetto Corse.

For Abarth, this marks a return to promotional trophy events, a niche it has made its own for more than thirty years. Since 1977, to be precise, when the first ever Autobianchi A112 Abarth Championship was held, followed by trophies for the Fiat Uno, Uno Turbo, Cinquecento, Seicento, Punto Kit and Super 1600, Stilo, Panda Kit.

The Fiat 500 Abarth rally version will be type approved for Group R3T, the category for turbocharged cars up to 1600 cm3 in capacity. This class will be the future of the specialism because it represents a good compromise between car cost and performance. Ideal for private drivers and young people who want to show their worth in a true racing car, capable of outstanding performance by any standard.

The Fiat 500 Abarth power unit is 1368 cm3 with a Garret GT 1446 fixed geometry turbocharger capable of delivering a power of 180 hp (132 kw) at 5500 rpm.

The gearbox is sequential, front meshing with 6 speeds and includes a multiplate self-locking differential, twin plate clutch and special half-axles.

Great care has been taken to ensure the suspension can be adjusted to obtain a ride suited to each driver's individual driving style. The racing shock-absorbers are adjustable, with coaxial spring and wheel to alter the ground clearance plus special shims to adjust the caster and camber angles.

The 7" x 17" OZ asphalt rims are designed for 19/62-17 tyres.
The Brembo brakes are all disc, ventilated at the front with 4 callipers, solid disc at the rear with brake distributor and governor. The handbrake is hydraulic.
The Fiat 500 Abarth is equipped with a special welded roll-bar integral with the body, the required safety devices and FIA type-approved seats with 6 seat belt anchorage points.

The weight is the lowest set by the regulations for this category: 1080 kg unladen.
Great care has also been taken over the details, beginning with a livery that is most decidedly in keeping with tradition, complemented by a lovingly crafted interior and instruments.
